Venturia: The New Kingdom

Venturia brings an intriguing Duran Duran/Savage Garden element to progressive metal on The New Kingdom. Already huge (or so I'm told) in its home country of France, the band mixes musical precision with the playfulness of pop and the pretentiousness of prog for a listen unlike anything else that's currently flooding the marketplace.

New York-based vocalist Marc Ferreira (who released a hard-to-find hard-rock album in 2002 under the name Ferreira) brings a Simon LeBon vibe to his delivery, and when he's joined on some tracks by the non-operatic but smart-and-sexy-girl-next-door vocals of Lydie Robin, the harmonious effect is intoxicating – so much so that the six-minute instrumental, "Candle of Hope Through A Night of Fears," is a big black hole in an otherwise well-paced record.

Lyrically, Venturia ventures far from the pop world with songs like "The Unholy One" and "Dear Dead Bride." But it is the uplifting "Walk on To the Daylight" – a mid-paced, bouncy acoustic number featuring both Ferreira and Robin – that best represents this band's potential. File under "very promising" and hope that Venturia isn't just a one-off project.

Venturia: The New Kingdom

My Score:

France's future of Prog Metal seems to be in the hands of the quintet, Venturia. Venturia's new CD, The New Kingdom (Lion Music) featuring guitar shredder Charly Sahona, is a blend of pop rock sensibilities with melodic Dream Theater like metal virtuosity. There is something here for everyone. The heavy progressive metal and technical expertise will keep even the most discerning skeptic metal head happy, while the pop melodies, featuring both vocalists Lydie Robin & Marc Ferreira, will win over any rock fan. The blend of these elements makes Venturia a welcome change from the norm.

Formed in 2000 by French guitarist Charly Sahona and drummer Diego Rapacchietti, Venturia found their stride when New York vocalist Marc Ferreira was paired with the beautiful Lydie Robin to create a great male/female singing duo. The power of Ferreira's vocals with the clean, sensual and passionate female vocals of Robin, make a strong contrast of aggressive and melodic duet lines, one not heard very much in rock today. Coupled with the sheer virtuosity of the musicianship in this band, Venturia really sets themselves in a class not fully occupied at the moment. The riffing of Charly Sahona and the tight, tight rhythm section of drummer Rapacchietti and bassist Thomas James, plus throw in guest keys player Kevin Codfert, and instantly one is reminded of Images & Words era DT. Furious, calm and passionate.

The New Kingdom is an 8 track CD that starts out hard and heavy and sets the tone for a great CD to come. There are very many textures to this record. Heavy, technical, melodic, serene, all describe the passages of which Venturia take you on. Technical prowess is the main ingredient, which Venturia provides that in huge doses, and the dual vocals really sets them apart. Add those 2 great elements and what you have is a very talented band that should be heard from for years to come.

My Score:

I think this is really great...very unusual prog metal delivery topped with very melodic male / female vocal harmonies. Another prog metal winner from Lion music.
