Karmadoza: Karmadoza (EP)

Montreal's Karmadoza debut self-titled EP is an interesting mix of hard rock and metal styles, somewhere along the lines of early The Gathering, Pat Benatar, Black Sabbath, and PJ Harvey. Lead vocalist Vicky Martel has a strong set of pipes, and is backed up admirably by the line-up of Raphael Corbeil on drums, Francois Legendre & Stephane Vigeant on guitars, and bassist Vincent Peake. There are some doomy crunch riddled moments, especially on the opener "Divide", which marches along at a slow Sabbath-like tempo while Martel wails over the top. Even "Dreamnaut" is able to send some chills with its creepy dirges, but manages to rise above typical doom metal thanks to the strong vocals of Martel. The music is melodic and overall pretty fun to listen to, alternating between strong radio friendly rock, like on the cover of The Turtles song "She'll Come Back", to the more metal based numbers. This could be a band to watch out for when they release their full-length debut.
