Fear of Eternity: Spirit of Sorrow

Fear of Eternity is an Italian symphonic black metal project written, performed, and produced by Andrea Tilenni. Unlike much of the more popular bands of the genre today like Dimmu Borgir, Borknagar, Cradle of Filth, and Old Man's Child, Fear of Eternity take a much slower, doomier, and progressive stance than many of their peers. Tortured, raspy vocals and keyboards play the focal point of the music on Spirit of Sorrow, with guitars, bass, and drums almost an afterthought and more in the background. In fact, take out Tilenni's black metal hissing vocals and you have basically a very symphonic prog album. The keyboard work is expertly performed, very much in the style of Italian prog rock legends like PFM, Le Orme, and Banco. A song like "Atrocious Pain" starts off with wonderful synth passages before the growling vocals set in, and the majestic "Silence Fortification" contains plenty of piano melodies and huge beds of orchestral synthesizers. In fact, there are tunes here, like "Sad Dreams" and "That Rainy Day", that are so well thought out musically, and so symphonic, that I almost wish this album was instrumental. Guitars play very little role here, and at times the black metal vocals are somewhat of a distraction, and on more than one occasion I wanted to just hear the keyboard orchestrations, which really are the central point throughout this CD.

So, if you like your symphonic black metal with less speed and metal, and more symphonic orchestrations, definitely check this album out.
