Magenta: I'm Alive (Single)

While Magenta's Broken CD single focused primarily on material of a softer vein, this single finds the band experimenting a bit more with a heavier sound, but without abandoning their trademark progressive feel.

The two heavier songs, the title track and "King of The Skies" are the main highlights offered on this EP, both are up-tempo guitar driven numbers that find the band treading some new ground musically and more at home here on this EP than on the Seven album. This single also includes a demo of a song called "Cold" which has the dubious distinction of being the first song that vocalist Christina and band founder Rob Reed ever worked on together in Reed's previous band Cyan. It was intended for release but remained on the shelf until now. "Cold" is a great song with a slow and laid back feel highlighted by it's many layers and dreamy vocal beginning. As the song builds Christina takes her vocals to a new level, this track is definitely worthy of inclusion on this EP. The version of "Pride" has a different beginning and is not the same version that was on Seven and it's interesting to hear what Rob Reed had originally decided to leave off the album version. After the audio tracks are finished the band tacked on a bonus video of their song "Broken" which is a standard, band onstage video performing with no audience. It doesn't offer that much creatively but is a nice inclusion nonetheless. Overall this single didn't excite me as much as Broken did but the material on this disc is solid and I'd still recommend it if you are a fan of the band.
