Mecca Bodega: Skin

Remember that pretentious new age guy played by Tim Robbins in the movie Hi Fidelity? I'll bet he'd fall all over himself listening to this band. Mecca Bodega are a New York City based percussion ensemble specializing in a fusion of world music beats and quasi new age noodling. While there is a certain degree of energy and charm present on Skin, this isn't the kind of music that requires much active listening. All manner of percussion are utilized here, from your basic drum kit to exotic African tribal instruments. There are some synthesizers and hammered dulcimers to mix things up, but the focus is clearly on the drums. You won't find songs per se, but rather a collection of rhythmic tracks designed to do…well, I'm not really sure. Don't get me wrong, this isn't bad music and I like to nod out to Kitaro once in a while as much as the next guy, but an hour of this stuff is plenty. Mecca Bodega would be terrific accompaniment for browsing the aisles of your local health food store, but their ersatz stew of world music, jungle beats, found sounds and new age twaddle may not make for long hours of listening pleasure at home. At least not in my home.
