Possession: Eternally Haunt

The guys in Possession are dedicated, hard-working men. Not only is their album, Eternally Haunt, self-produced and self-recorded, they've taken the task of distribution on their own shoulders, after a nasty run-in with their original distributor. It's not uncommon for them to take out full-page ads in glossy metal magazines, advertising this, what is obviously their pride and joy.

Musically, Possession is extremely tight. This is a very fast, very heavy record, with some of the best, most crisp drum sound I've heard in a while. My only complaint is with Nyk Edinger's vocals, which get a little carried away at times. Nyk clearly has a great voice, capable of hitting some ungodly notes, but he chooses not to use it to its potential most of the time.

Lyrically, I'm intrigued by Possession. While they look like they are obsessed with the occult and related matters, closer inspection of the words to the songs makes me think these guys are Christians! Maybe they'll correct me if I'm wrong, but if I'm right, then this is one of the most interesting albums from a spiritual standpoint in quite a while; in addition to the references to the cross of Golgotha, we get retellings of the parable of the house that is cleaned only to have the demons return stronger, as well as "legion" being sent into a flock of pigs. It sheds a whole new light on these stories to hear them told with aggression and darkness, rather than a soothing preacher's voice.
