From Finland comes Lost Detour, a group who formed in 2003 and have just released their second demo Painted Veil, an EP comprised of two songs. Mixing death metal with progressive rock and some jazzy pop (yes, quite the combination) Lost Detour are one of the most unique bands to come around in some time.
Neither the press sheet nor the bands website lists who is in the band or who plays what, so I'll just break down the music. "Painted" opens things up with some raging death metal, complete with crunchy guitar riffs, growling vocals, and driving rhythms, but then moments of melodic progressive rock and some shades of jazz-tinged pop rears their head as well. It's an interesting combination of styles and ideas to say the least. When the near 10 minute "Veil" begins, you almost get the feeling that you are listening to a romantic and melodic neo-prog album, before the manic death metal growls come crashing into the mix, then giving way to soaring progressive metal vocals, nimble keyboard & guitar runs, and acrobatic drum work, instantly bringing to mind Dream Theater. Back and forth the ebb and flow between prog, death metal, and progressive metal goes throughout this piece, with dashes here and there of jazz. Whether the vocals are by one person or a few, I don't know, but all styles are performed admirably, and the musicianship of the band is rock solid. I think, when Lost Detour finally puts together a full-length release, they will really surprise a lot of people with their variety filled style that encompasses many genres. Very interesting stuff.
