Antimatter: Planetary Confinement

Planetary Confinement is the third release from Antimatter, a band formed by Duncan Patterson of Anathema. Largely an acoustic effort, Planetary Confinement is a dark, lonely dirge through the recesses of depression. The promotional sheet recommends Antimatter to fans of Portishead, Massive Attack and Pink Floyd (huh?) but reminds me just as much of recent Peter Hammill. We're talking very moody, mellow stuff here. What puzzles me is that the album was recorded by two different lineups at two locations. The tracks are evenly divided between each lineup and alternate male and female vocals. While neither group shares a single musician, the tone is the same throughout the entire album: bleak, hopeless and sad. Consequently, there aren't any standout tracks here, just a solid 45-minute suicide note of an album. While Planetary Confinement is well done for what it is, this isn't the kind of music I'd reach for on a regular basis. But those inclined towards dark, gothic, gloomy sound textures will probably find Antimatter to be a bundle of joy.
