The Scandinavian death metal legends are back. Now 17 years into their career, Sweden's Dismember still show they have what it takes on their latest The God That Never Was, a brutal and blistering assault on the senses that is sure to strike a chord with today's metal legions. Featuring ten cuts of prime death metal, Dismember waste no time on The God That Never Was with pleasantries, as things kick off with the sheer brutality of "Shadows of the Mutilated" and never let up from there. Surprisingly, there's also plenty of melody here, which you don't always get with an album this heavy. Don't believe me? Well, take a listen to the catchy riffs and melodies of "Autopsy", which despite the frantic death metal framework also has a solid NWOBHM feel to it, especially the lead guitar work. This still is even more apparent on the excellent instrumental "Into the Temple of Humiliation", which comes across like Iron Maiden on steroids. However, above all else, this is the work of a veteran band that knows how to deliver the goods. Much like their contemporaries from Poland, Vader, Dismember has created a collection of destructive songs that come in, kick ass, and get out of Dodge quickly, before you even know what hit you. So, is the 35-minute running time of The God That Never Was a bit on the short side? Perhaps, but there's no denying that what Dismember have delivered here is quality stuff. Heavy, crushing, and memorable, and that's good enough in my book. Oh, and the cover art is killer too!
