Tears Of Anger: In The Shadows

The second album from Tears Of Anger brings us a steady dose of modern Metal. In The Shadows features the rhythm section of Mind's Eye, a band who is really making a name for themselves, but brothers Benny and Bjorn Jansson have a single focus in mind. The melodic song structures of Mind's Eye is replaced by the thunder riffing of Tears Of Anger.

"In The Shadows" and "How Will I Live" are classic examples of the riff-laden nature of these songs. Fast, pounding sixteenth notes in a common chord progression, leave you fairly bored by most of the output. Both Jansson's fit the standard metal vocal sound, but you can't help feeling like they are trying too hard to sound like Jorn Lande. There just isn't anything to set this band apart.

The most interesting song is the novelty number "I Hate You". The band shows some talent and overall there aren't any terrible songs. It just seems to be average metal built around average guitar riffs. There are better new releases on Lion Music to spend your money on.

My Score:

This is a great release from Lion music- loads of great chugging guitar riffs, but not an overly progressive album. This is a more melodic prog, with a vocalist with a range just above Coverdale/Lange, but I dont think he is trying to sound like either. There are some great and unusual chorus and hooks on this album. Well worth getting if you enjoy the more straight forward melodic prog style in the vein of Masterplan/Red Circuit.
