Taking many of its musical cues from the Grateful Dead (as well as early Santana), Maryland's G-13 emerges after nearly a decade as a live band with its debut studio album. Produced by Mark Karan, who has worked with Dead offshoot Ratdog, Still Dancin' also features guest appearances by players from other Dead-related bands like The Other Ones and Phil Lesh & Friends. Don't be alarmed, though. This isn't music that's ripe for some hippie bong fest. Granted, opener "Stars" really sounds like classic Dead, "Sussex County Blues" is more bluegrass than blues and the lovely title track ballad whispers in country-music tones. But G-13's upbeat improvisation and can-do spirit oozes out of each of the nine tunes on this independently released CD, and you can feel the years of love and labor that went into them — even if that feeling is a familier one. Still Dancin' may not be prog, metal or even all rock. But as I've contended elsewhere on this site, good music (regardless of the originality factor) should not be restrained by genre categorization.
