Deadly, vicious, and brutal-these three words basically describe the latest release on Century Media records from Brazil's death metal trio Krisiun. Their sixth full-length studio release follows a similar style to their previous albums, yet this time around the boys seem a tad more focused, displaying an extra edge of ferocity and technical precision that has given them just the slightest hint of sophistication. Not something you would normally say to describe a death metal band, but damn if Krisiun don't sound all grown up here on AssassiNation.
This one blisters, bubbles, boils, and pounds from start to finish, with Alex Camargo's lethal growls leading the charge, backed up the by the relentless riff and drum barrage of brothers Moyses and Max Kolesne. As with all of the band's material, the bass work of Camargo and Moyses Kolesne's brutal riffage intertwine and mesh quite well, creating this awesome and technical wall of sound, best heard on tracks like "Decimated", "United in Deception" and "Refusal". After a nifty yet all too brief drum solo titled "Summon" from star player Max, the band launches into an almost doomy metal gem called "Sweet Revenge", a nice change of pace from the band who normally pummel the listener with speedy death metal.
Although they have lived in the shadow of Sepultura for many years, I think the time is finally right for Krisiun to be known as Brazil's top death metal act. Assassination is a polished and mature effort from a band that has learned the art of creating brutal yet quality extreme metal music.
