The Crucial Fiction: The Crucial Fiction:

You get a CD in the mail with a hand written note that specifically states "we are young" and "we recorded this ourselves" and you figure that it's going to be a long review process. But then I put in the debut album by The Crucial Fiction and the first thing I thought was "HOLY SHIT". The maturity showed right away. You have to walk a fine line to blend voice over to a song, but in "Genesis: 2480" it works perfectly to lead up to the jazz-tinged CD highlight "The Way We Roll".

But then things begin to fall apart. The vocals on "Castles made of Silicon" are a little under mixed, followed directly by the over mixed "Competent Liar". "Two Dresses" has the right idea of independent instruments working together, but breaks down into nothing more than guitar-wanking. "All's Well" and "Running Down" recapture some of the magic, but there are just too many songs that go no where, like "Can't Stop".

Overall though, this is an excellent effort for a debut young band trying to mix indie with experimentation.. I think many people will enjoy this CD, but I am hoping that it is the start of something spectacular. Keep working boys, you are getting close. Strangely, I think this will be a CD that people go back and buy later.
