Imminent Peril: Stop, Drop, and DIE (demo)

Imminent Peril are a 5-piece band from Illinois, who play a pretty complex and maniacal blend of old school thrash, black, math, and progressive metal. From start to finish on this 11 song demo CD it's pretty relentless stuff, with constantly shifting time signatures and razor sharp riffs, and the crazed vocals of Beavis front and center like an insane combination of Dani Filth, Devin Townsend, King Diamond, and Glenn Danzig. In fact, for most, it will be Beavis' vocals that will either make or break it for you on Stop, Drop, and DIE. At times he takes the music to Cradle of Filth territory with his strong black metal styled delivery, and on some occasions he sounds as if he is trying too hard, like on the unlistenable "I Hate Zombies", where he elicits screams that reminded me of Sheri Moon from the movies House of 1000 Corpses and The Devils Rejects. Otherwise, depending on your take of his vocals, the twin guitar work of Phil and Nate is actually quite good (check out the intense interplay on "The Dick") and will appeal to most fans of extreme and complex metal. The rhythm section of drummer Mike and bassist Brett blasts along furiously, turning songs like "Dance With the Dead" and "Deal With You Tomorrow" into raging slabs of thrash precision. Imminent Peril are a band that seem to have many of the tools to get to the next level, so if they can secure a record deal with a small label, find a decent producer, and temper the vocals just a little bit, we might be hearing more from these guys in the future.
