The Cranes: The Cranes

The Cranes are an independent 4 piece band from Montreal, formed around the nucleus of brothers Cameron (guitars, vocals) & Scott (drums, vocals) Stirling, Richard Leduc (lead vocals & guitars) and Sylvain Chayer (bass). The band has been together for about 7 years playing on and off and their self titled debut release serves up 8 songs of straight ahead, melodic up tempo rock. While their sound may lean more towards classic hard rock, in the same vein perhaps as one of Canada's most successful bands, The Tragically Hip, (it's probably no coincidence then that a few of the members once did time in a Hip cover band in the past) I did hear a bit of a southern rock influence as well, similar in nature to The Black Crowes. The bands main strength lies in their flair for creating songs with a heavy emphasis on memorable hooks, as tracks "Glass Tables" and "Hip Kinda Place" stake their claim as potential anthems suited for radio play. The band has obviously worked their material to perfection because the songs and performances are tight, not to mention they did a great job on the production side, as the sound is clean and crisp throughout. It's good to see a band like The Cranes hasn't forgotten something that many other bands are often guilty of, writing good songs. If your taste in music leans towards some of the bands I've mentioned in this review then my feeling is The Cranes will fit nicely into your collection.

Note: The band does not currently have a website but if you are looking for more information or would like to purchase a copy of the CD, you can do so by e-mailing the band here:
