Eyes of Fire: Prisons

Century Media Records continues to try and break the death and black metal mold that they normally reside in with the release of Prisons by California's Eyes of Fire. The band's sophomore release is a boiling metal cauldron that is pretty hard to describe or categorize, as it contains elements of doom, gothic, and death metal, yet remains very melodic and accessible. Comprised of Nicky Bernardi on drums, Pete Traux on keyboards, Matt Fisher on bass/vocals, Dan Kaufman on guitar/vocals, and Cary Petersen on guitars, these guys run the gamut from emotional and atmospheric gothic flavored rock to brutal and aggressive metal with plenty of anger and power. A song like "True Love" starts off with bubbling keyboards and melancholy drenched clean vocals before mounds of massive guitar crunch sets in, turning it into a great dramatic hard rock opus along the lines of Anathema or Katatonia.

Other highlights include the progressive and spacey "Dead to the World", which also has a nice gothic feel thanks to the heaping amount of keyboards and moody vocals, the furious metal attack of "Falling Apart", the cold and doomy landscape that is "Salvation", and the massive and epic sounds of "Fire Inside", an 8-minute journey into gothic and doomy progressive metal. Overall, Prisons is a nice surprise, with plenty of dual guitar crunch, keyboards, strong vocals, some atmospheric and acoustic bits, and a decent amount of variety. If you like your music heavy, but with a gothic, doomy, and progressive edge, check this out.
