Kickin Grass Band: On the Short Rows

Let me say this right up front, On the Short Rows, the latest CD from North Carolina's Kickin Grass Band, certainly isn't prog rock, nor metal, nor fusion. Hardly. These guys play a mesh of bluegrass, rock, and country, that is highly musical and melodic. So what are they doing on a site like Sea of Tranquility? I've asked myself that same question quite a few times before making the decision to include a review here. You see, sometimes we get sent CD's by bands that don't always fall nicely into the genres we cover, but certain aspects of the music just might appeal to some of our readers. Seeing as we do dive into on occasion the rootsier side of things, epsecially the jam band scene, and even some Southern Rock, then Kickin Grass starts to look a little relevant. From an instrumental standpoint, there are some songs here that will certainly appeal to fans of the Southern Rock and jam scene, like the blazing instrumentals "Cloverleaf", complete with dueling fiddle, guitar, banjo, and mandolin, and the soaring "Pot Liquor", which sees Jamie Dawson really working overtime on the mandolin. The rest of the album is pretty sweet folky, bluegrass flavored material that should really spark some interest from fans of this style of music. So, if we have any prog fans here at Sea of Tranquility who happen to have an affinity for well played bluegrass, by all means check this out.
