Fans of British blues-rock should enjoy this live DVD recorded in 2004 of long-time act Chicken Shack. Since the early 70's, guitarist Stan Webb has led Chicken Shack, and although the band never reached popular status that bands like Fleetwood Mac, Savoy Brown, or Ten Years After achieved, they have always had a strong cult following, and even helped launch the careers of Christine Perfect (later to be McVie of Fleetwood Mac fame) and Paul Raymond, who went on to join Savoy Brown, UFO, and MSG. This set here, recorded in Lyme Regis, Southern England, is full of no frills, blues soaked riffs and solos, with Webb's fiery licks and scratchy vocals leading the way. The guy can still certainly tear it up on his Gibson Les Paul, as shown on such standout songs like "The Thrill Has Gone", "Spoonful", and the scorching originals "Stan Webb's Chicken Shack Opera" and "I Know You Know Me". The rest of the band is tight yet laid back, letting Webb have most of the spotlight. While Stan's guitar playing is certainly as good as ever, his vocals have not held up too well. During many instances in this show he really strains to get high notes, and is off key quite a bit. But who ever said blues singers had to be perfect, right? Anyway, check this one out for the hot blues and rock guitar firepower, and witness a talented player who never really got his due.
