Violet: The Last Cathedral

Violet consists of the Brooklyn New York songwriting duo of Meredith Minogue (vocals / guitar) and Jim Barry (guitar), The Last Cathedral is the bands second CD released independently through their own label Wine and Vinyl Music. Violet's musical style is not normally something I would spend a lot of time listening to, and I do listen to a lot of varied styles of music, as it definitely leans towards the heavy folk side of things. However that being said, I was drawn to the overall strength of the songs themselves and found myself playing the whole thing from beginning to end on more than one occasion. Minogues strength lies in her powerful and convincing vocal prowess and the songs on The Last Cathedral are like well polished little gems, it sounds like she and Barry have been writing together forever. Various other instruments are added to the mix courtesy of a supporting cast of musicians who help to round out the overall sound. The whole disc does have an indie, coffee house vibe running through the music and I wouldn't be surprised to hear a few of these cuts on college radio. The layout and graphical design are another area where they score big points and it just goes to show that they obviously spent a great deal of time and attention to detail on every aspect of the CD. There's nothing really negative to say about this release at all and like the connoisseurs of the fine wine they so rightly enjoy, this CD will only get better with time and repeated listens.
