City Weezle: City Weezle

City Weezle are a 4 piece band based in Paris France and this self titled 4 track EP is the groups debut. The Weezle sound can best be described as a blend between metal / funk with some jazz thrown in for good measure. Vocalist Simon Fleury's style is quite interesting as he hisses his way through the verses of the CD's opening cut over a Primus like bass and back beat courtesy of Maxim Gilbon (bass) and Erik Carrere (drums) respectively as guitarist Slvain Cloux adds a frenetic solo to the mix. Cloux's tasty chops get a chance to shine once again on "Vampire Boy" while Fleury relishes his opportunity to open his vocal chords a bit, adding some nice powerful screams. The band unfortunately slows things down a bit by the third track "Storm", which is maybe the weakest track out of the bunch, not a bad song though as Fluery's vocals sound remarkably like Mike Patton's. If this track slowed a bit of the momentum, then the band immediately gets it back with the riff heavy disc closer and my personal favorite "Way Out West" which really highlights the bands Tomahawk / Faith No More style influence. Overall this is a nice sampler of City Weezle's sound, it's well produced and the sound is tight throughout. I hope the band continues in the heavier direction as I think they do it quite well, they all have good chops as musicians and Fleury's vocal style, while not necessarily unique, his energetic sometimes manic delivery suits the bands music perfectly. It will be interesting to see where they take their sound and what they'll come up with on a full length release.
