Singapore's Impiety return with their fourth album Paramount Evil, a skull-crushing blend of brutal death, grind, and black metal, fused with just enough technical precision to keep things interesting. For this one, they have added some members from Mexico's Ravager, who help the band up the mayhem even further. These days it's hard to sift through all the bands that populate the extreme metal scene, and to be honest, Impiety don't do enough to really distinguish themselves from the many other bands that are on the scene, but let's give these guys some credit. They obviously have some serious chops, especially in the drum and guitar department, and the production on this thing is pretty crisp and powerful. It's just that after a while each song tends to sound the same, and there's just no relenting from track to track. This might not be a bad thing for some, but I tend to like a little variety in my music, and I can think of countless bands in the metal genre who play in a similar style but mix it up much better than these guys do. Don't get me wrong, there are some kick ass numbers, such as the raging double bass blasts of "Mighty Impiety", the epic thrash of "Sunrise Defloration", and the death metal onslaught of "Reign the Vulture", which contains some awesome vocals from Shyaithan. For the most part though, many of the songs are interchangeable, and the band seems caught in a struggle of whether they want to go full blown death or black metal. For my money they should stick to their obvious Morbid Angel influences and run with it. A solid, if unspectacular release.
