Divine Empire: Method Of Execution

Florida's Divine Empire continues the sunshine states honor of having been the birth place for some of the most lethal and extreme death metal, a tradition which saw the 90's scene flourish with bands such as Death and Morbid Angel. As the scene has died out in popularity somewhat, now the time seems ripe for a band like Divine Empire to pick up the torch of their brethren and take the power back, a challenge they definitely sound up for with their latest CD called Method Of Execution. The band was formed back in 1998 by ex- Malevolent Creation members, Jason Blachowicz (bass & vocals) and J.P. Soars (guitar), after going through a few drummers, they settled on Duane Timlin a few years back and this is the lineup featured on Method of Execution. This CD is an absolute, straight ahead onslaught, but for all it's evident brutality, the riffs are absolutely killer and Blachowicz's growling death vocals are as evil as they come, underneath it all you get a CD which manages to somehow take the genre just a little bit further. The guitar riffs and melodies hint that the band has perhaps taken inspiration from some of metal's other genres as well and they deserve credit for taking off the blinders a bit and absorbing these influences and welcoming them into the Divine Empire sound. On the subject of diversity and taking chances, I loved the brilliant acoustic interlude, complete with what sounds like violins on "Prelude To The Storm" which leads headlong into the burning "Storm Of Hatred". The closing cut, the instrumental "Reduced to Ashes" also gives Soars ample opportunity to show off his meaty chops and it's a great way to finish things off. Since the release of Method Of Execution, the band has once again changed personnel, this time leaving Blachowicz as the sole remaining member, but he's since found new blood and has vowed to inject new life into the Empire. If he is able to keep the band on course, I'm sure they will be able to find even greater success. This band has lived through quite a few setbacks which has delayed their rise to the top of the heap, but this CD is their best and most complete work to date, so it will be interesting to see what they will come up with next, considering they are basically starting over. Until then, choose you weapons.
