Dysinformation: Smoke & Mirrors

Hailing from the city that spawned Queensr˙che, Nirvana and Soundgarden, it's fitting that the sound Seattle modern rockers Dysinformation make echos the aggressions and aspirations of those three bands. Granted, these four guys have no chance of enjoying the kind of mega success as their predecessors, but with a gritty singer in Pete Mainzer and a worthy guitarist who used to be a tech for Zakk Wylde, Dysinformation has the potential to create a major buzz in the American Northwest and hard-rock underground. Highlights of the band's debut CD, Smoke & Mirrors, include the ominous "Acid Rain," the catchy "So Young" (a unexpected commentary on modern-day parenting) and the Guns N' Roses-inspired "Dream Gone Bad." Dysinformation goes hardcore on "Step Aside," and even the band's version of "Born to Be Wild" (a tired song that until now didn't need be covered again) sounds fresh. Solid, smart and short - less than 33 minutes, with no ballads - Smoke & Mirrors is a loose and simple disc recorded by a confident group of veteran musicians.
