Calvarium: The Skull of Golgotha

Calvarium are a black metal trio who hail from Finland and The Skull of Golgotha was their first full length CD, released in 2003. The band was formed in 2001 and after a couple of shots at creating some demos, they were offered a record deal by Dynamic Records and the time was finally right for them to release their black manifesto to the world. This is a truly evil offering of 8 songs, not including the eerie opening instrumental track, "Three Nails and The Hammer of Satan". The majority of the songs all seem to fall into the same category as far as speed and tempo are concerned and the production quality is a bit suspect as overall it suffers from a bit of a tinny sounding mix. It would have been nice to have seen the guitars pushed up in the mix a little bit more in order to get more of a feel for the riffs, also there are little or no leads to be found anywhere in the guitar work as well. Some songs appear to feature basic keyboards in the background which offer a bit of a change of pace and gives the tracks a bit of badly needed atmosphere. The vocals are in the prototypical black / death growling style, so there is really nothing new there. I have heard a few samples from their latest release Assaulting the Divine and I can tell you that there seems to have been a real concerted effort at improving both the sound and song quality, which leaves The Skull of Golgotha as an average debut from a band that perhaps now is just beginning to realize their true potential.
