Moments in Grace: Moonlight Survived

Moments in Grace bursts out of the Florida indie-music scene and into mainstream America with "Stratus" - the soaring modern rocker that opens the band's debut album, Moonlight Survived. Punctuated by thick and moody guitars, Jeremy Griffith's powerful and expressive vocals, and a loud chorus/quiet verse stop-and-go arrangement, the song announces the arrival of a confident young band. Elsewhere, this quartet evokes U2 ("We Feel the Songs") and even a hint of Tribe-era Queensr˙che ("My Dying Day"). The band wraps its drama, melancholy and angst into a genre the major labels like to call "emo." And because Moonlight Survived was released by Salad Days, a vanity imprint of Atlantic Records, Moments in Grace has unjustly been lumped together with bands like Sunny Day Real Estate and Jimmy Eat World. But these guys have much more hard rock in their veins - and even a few shards of metal - than most so-called emo bands. That is why they merit at least a little bit of your attention. That said, Moments in Grace takes too many moments (45 of them, to be more exact) to work their way though Moonlight Survived, as most of the album's latter songs plod along and lack the imagination of earlier tracks. But for an emo group (or whatever), there's still a surprising amount of likeable - and tolerable - material here.
