Ethereal is certainly the operative term here as Troy Donockley and Dave Bainbridge take a break from Iona and deliver an hour of audiophile quality somber devout instrumental music. Cynically, one could dub this recording New Age music and it is pretty drifty and all floating atmospherics with the bulk of the instrumentation in favor of keyboards, tin whistles and Uilleann pipes. From Silence is indeed a very quiet album and at times I forgot that I was even playing it. But the shimmering textures are quite lovely and even if the songs are unimaginatively titled "From Silence" Parts One thru Six, there is a nice Irish component within the arrangements. The songs weren't so much composed as improvised on the spot within the surroundings of a large cathedral and influenced by the recent death of a friend. To that end, the music is deeply introspective and certainly Christianity plays a large role as well. While I prefer the folk influenced progressive rock of Iona, From Silence is the perfect accompaniment for watching the sunrise on a Sunday morning.
