Belphegor: Goatreich – Fleshcult

Want to frighten and get rid of your neighbors? Play the latest death/black metal offering from the unholy lads from Belphegor. Their follow-up to the acclaimed Lucifer Infestus is a chilling, brutal concoction of extreme metal, not for the faint of heart, but focused in its execution. These Austrian's know how to pummel the listener with speed metal behemoth's like "Fornicationium et Immundus Diabolus", complete with manic double bass drum work and lightning fast tremelo picked guitar riffs, and the explosive "Bleeding Salvation" that chills the blood with plenty of growling vocals. "Swarm of Rats" is another speedy bone-crusher, as is the brutal title track.

However, when the band slows down for some pounding doom, like on "Sepulture of Hypocrisy", things start to get really interesting. This one is as far removed from the typical black metal style as this band has ever gone, with grueling, sludge ridden guitar riffs, moaning death metal growls, and plenty of melodic harmony guitar lines. "Kings Shall Be Kings" follows in a similar pattern, having slow, meaty guitar chords permeate the mix, giving the song an epic doom feel. As dark as this album is, the final cut "Festum Asinorum/Chapt. 2" ends things on a slightly more uplifting note (if that's possible for a death metal record) with some great melodic lead guitar work that cuts through the somber & heavy arrangements.

Goatreich – Fleshcult is sure to please most fans of the black and death metal genres. The music is well played, fast & technical, and the vocals and overall arrangements are pretty brutal. Check it out if you dare.
