Paths of Possession: Promises in Blood

Featuring singer George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher (Cannibal Corpse), Paths of Possession is a classic 80's meets Swedish death metal band that Fisher manages to find time to put into motion when his main band is on a break from recording and touring. Nowhere near the extreme nature of CC, Paths of Possession have a sound that mixes the melodic twin guitar sounds of Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, and Iced Earth, with the Swedish style of bands In Flames and Dark Tranquility. While it may not the most original metal you will ever hear, Promises in Blood has plenty of tasty harmony guitar melodies, which really make this CD. Check out the memorable and fluid dual lead harmonies on the otherwise crushing "Bleed the Meek", and the poignant acoustic work on the moody "Erzebet", two great examples of the talents of Jay Goodwin and Nick Goodyear. Fisher unleashes plenty of growly death metal rasps, and at times his vocals are almost don't seem to fit the nature of some of these songs, but when he lays off just a tad it is a perfect fit. Some of the slower, more grinding pieces work out well, like the early Savatage influenced title track, or "Where the Empty Gods Lie", a song that should appeal to Candemass fans just fine.

Paths of Possession have put together a solid concoction of thrash metal that has just enough elements of death and classic sounds to please a wise assortment of listeners.
