OtraBanda: Búsqueda

With influences from Camel, Caravan and Ambrosia, comes Columbia's OtraBanda. While keeping one foot in the history of progressive rock, Búsqueda sounds anything but stale. With excellent instrumentation and smooth vocals, the band mixes sounds to create soundscapes reminiscent of Trettioåriga Kriget

All lyrics are in Spanish, and although I own many non-English prog records, Spanish and French are my least favorite because they force such over pronunciation and lack flow. Luckily the songs here are more about the musical interaction of the musicians and the vocals act nicely as another instrument in the mix. Based on my best guess at the all-Spanish booklet, OtraBanda is a four-piece consisting of the excellent rhythm section of Alejandro Pinilla Bateria (Drums) and Cesar Díez Bajo (Bass). The dual guitars of Mauricio Jaramillo Voz y Guitarra and Carlos A. Perez Guitarra drive melody, counter-melody, as well as provide excellent soloing that will remind some of Carlos Santana.

The title track starts us off feeling very retro and has Camel-esqe guitar fills throughout. "Ciudad" is a guitar led piece that sounds modern, while still having a 70s Toto groove. "No" is the most expansive song on the CD with its driving guitar work. The two highlights are "Revolución", a haunting piece with excellent mixed themes throughout and the straight ahead prog-instrumental "Acecho". With the bass and guitar by play of "Encargo", I was reminded of Alias Eye. "Presente I", at 12 minutes of pure experimentation is just too long. This song breaks the flow of the album and really will probably be the place most people press NEXT, which is sad since the last 4 minutes is the best part of the song and will be the part skipped most.

Overall Búsqueda is a very interesting release that entertains throughout. Usually I would downgrade a CD for not having something new and fresh to present, but like Elden Av År, there are times when staying true to your influences can be presented without sounding stale. This is definitely the case here.
