John Francis Pastorius III. b. Dec 1,1951 d. Sep 21,1987
The story of John Francis (Jaco) Pastorius III is one of jazz's greatest tragedies. A veritable prodigy on the bass guitar, his star rose quickly in the 70s and fell almost as dramatically in the 80s. Mental problems, along with alcohol and drug problems made him a pariah who ultimately died a violent death by taking a heavy beating while trying to break into a club. His brief legacy as a composer left us some superb jazz. This collection of songs focuses on Pastorius compositions played in different settings by an ensemble cast of contemporary jazz musicians. Jaco's entire career is spanned, with tracks coming from his early eponymous albums, his stint with Weather Report, and his orchestral Word Of Mouth days from the early 80s. Every track does the man justice. The songs are played in various styles from bop, to jazz-funk, to Caribbean-inspired songs, to gospel. Fans of smooth jazz that doesn't fall into the Kenny G snoozefest should find a lot to enjoy on this record. Many of the acoustic guitar driven numbers are especially enjoyable and could serve as a perfect background for a leisurely Sunday morning .Fusion fans may also find such Weather Report numbers as "Havonia" (from the superb Heavy Weather) have been given an enjoyable overhaul.
Not just for fans of Mr Pastorius, this compilation offers a wide array of musical avenues to explore. These incredible compositions are treated with tender, loving care, by some truly gifted musicians.
