Edguy: Superheroes-Heroic DVD Edition (DVD)

Edguy's first ever DVD is a fun look at this exceptional German power metal band. Released in conjunction with the Superheroes single and EP (a song to be featured on the upcoming full-length CD Rocket Ride), this DVD features the video created for the single, three songs shot live in Brazil from the 2004 South American tour, plus interviews, a 2004 tour documentary, backstage and studio footage, and much more. It's near 90 minutes of Edguy for the fan to savor.

While the video for "Superheroes" is your typical low budget metal video (very indicative of the videos seen throughout the 80's) the band's tongue-in-cheek style is very evident, and the abundance of gorgeous women running around certainly is entertaining. Plus the fact that "Superheroes" is a great, catchy song. The lengthy 2004 tour documentary though is reason enough to get this DVD. It gives you plenty of insight into the band, especially Tobias Sammet, who not only is the band's frontman, but also their spokesman and comical genius. Tobias is as energetic backstage and in front of the camera as he is on stage, and chances are he will only be recognized as more of a star after people see this DVD. Seeing fans from South America and Japan screaming after him and the rest of the band was almost surprising, showing just how popular Edguy is becoming in certain parts of the world. The three songs included from the Brazil show, "Mysteria", "Under the Moon", and "Navigator" sees the band performing on a large stage in front of a sizeable and rabid crowd, a far cry from the tiny stages and moderate crowds we see them play here in the US. The studio footage is also enjoyable, as we see the band working with legendary producer Sascha Paeth for the first time. Again, Tobias is the star of the show, as he keeps the band and engineers entertained and on their toes at all times.

Superheroes-Heroic DVD Edition will make a nice addition to your DVD collection. For the true Edguy fan, this is a must have, and hopefully someday the band will release the full Brazil show as well.

Edguy: Superheroes-Heroic DVD Edition (DVD)

My Score:

Leave it to Tobias Sammett and his fellow members of EdGuy to deliver us another teaser/sampler of their upcoming music. The band did this with the EP King Of Fools last year prior to releasing The Hellfire ClubRocket Ride and is entitled "Superheroes". It's a fun track and the video is just simply full of the ridiculous humor that Tobias Sammett possesses. It is also loaded with Playboy bunny types, so he is clearly aiming to have this video be easily remembered. The song is very catchy and flows along the same lines as the last few singles the band has released. Essentially if you enjoyed King Of Fools you should enjoy Superheroes.

In addition to the video clip we get three live performances from a show in Brazil taken from The Hellfire Club tour. I have to admit I enjoyed these segments the most as I had just seen EdGuy performing with Hammerfall and their level of play was still very fresh in my mind. This is a great chance for those who have never experienced the band live to get to enjoy some songs delivered to excellence. Of course having three tracks like this is also a teaser and makes one desire a full-length concert DVD. Let's hope that this is one of the bands eventual plans. There is also a worthwhile and enjoyable making of the video documentary and a few exclusive interviews and photo galleries. A fun experience all around, and I am looking forward to the new CD very much as a result.
