Idioverse: Tiny Liquorice

I have put off reviewing the demo CD Tiny Liquorice from avant-rock band Idioverse because I couldn't really get a handle on it. This 4 song demo contains the throw-away intro "Soupy Girl" which has no value, the excellent title track with it's solid bass groove and interesting lyrical delivery, the average alt-rocker "Red Buzzer" and the very interesting, but quite fully developed "Scraping the Paint".

On a demo, you like to see the diversity of a band and what they are capable of, but this one runs the extreme of the gambit. There is no doubting the ability of the band, but the music just isn't as mature as you would like. "Tiny Liquorice" is worth noting and should probably end up on the bands first full length CD, but the other songs will need to be reworked or disposed of.

The band has some of the jangle of U2 with some of the quirks of bands like Specimen 37. But nothing on this CD approaches the songwriting of those two groups. The demo Tiny Liquorice is not recommended for purchase, but keep an eye out for future output.
