Sandalinas: Living on the Edge

There's a reason that "If It Wasn't For You," one of 10 songs on the debut CD by Sandalinas, sounds a lot like Bruce Dickinson-era Iron Maiden: Band namesake and Barcelona-born Jordi Sandalinas switched his allegiance from piano to guitar after hearing Maiden's Adrian Smith play. Now he's got a six-piece band named after him and a seasoned singer (Apollo Papathanasio from Time Requiem and Meduza) who sounds like David Coverdale. Living on the Edge boasts 10 hard-working hard-rock songs - half of them extremely solid and memorable. But storming rockers like the title track, "All Along the Everglades," "If It Wasn't For You" and "The Conqueror," along with the closing acoustic ballad "Die Hard," are brought down by mindless muck like "The Ritual of Truth" (Get a load of these lines: "The wild survivor/Is eating for desire/The cold pretender/It's hard to remember"). Nevertheless, Living on the Edge reverberates with Maiden, Black Sabbath, Whitesnake and Pink Cream 69 echoes, and production by King Diamond's Andy LaRocque (who also plays guitar on two songs) adds substance to even the weakest songs.
