Supagroup: Rules

Retro rules on Rules. Supagroup is a New Orleans-by-way-of-Anchorage quartet of shit-grinners that includes two brothers, a Lemmy look-alike and a drummer with a penchant for wearing headbands. If you took Aerosmith and AC/DC out of their mid-70s booze-and-dope-fueled universe, picked up David Lee Roth-era Van Halen along the way and then plopped all three bands into the middle of the stage that Guns N' Roses performed on in the "Paradise City" video, you'd have Supagroup, shamelessly cranking out the sleazy, ornery, horned-up songs on Rules. With little ditties like "Bastard," "It Takes Balls" and "Let's Go (Get Wasted)" - not to mention sheer poetry like "Your photographic mammaries/Are etched upon my memories" - these dudes have made a near-perfect party album for 2005. It's none-too-subtle for today's instant-gratification generation of young hipsters, while its roots proudly stretch back to the classic school of hard rocks (thus appealing to aging headbangers). Oh, one more thing: These boys didn't settle for any old producer. They snagged Kevin Shirley (Aerosmith, Black Crowes and Dream Theater) to help them make a high-octane record of timeless cock rock.
