New Jersey's Ghost Orgy have put together one of the more unique listening experiences here on Lullabies for Lunatics. Are they metal, are they goth, are they prog-rock, or are they avant-garde jazz? Well, the band are a twisted combination of all of them, as they churn out an ominous brew that comes across as a heavier version of Pennsylvania's The Red Masque. Led by the devilish vocals of the lovely Dina Concina, the band mixes the crushing metal guitars of Meric Sarkhov with the weaving lead viola playing courtesy of Elena Doroftel for a sound that pummels one minute then soothes the next. Listen to the sledgehammer riffs and rhythms on "Fading Fast" do battle with Doroftel's soaring viola lines, while Concina's vocals tell the tale of a poor soul who is quickly losing his hold on reality. Prog-metal meets bluegrass on the thumper "Thirteen", while "Cloaked in Fear" is a chilling gothic rocker that also recalls Red era King Crimson with its haunting viola passages and off-kilter guitar riffs. There's a metal hoedown on the wicked "Diva of Destruction", a tune that I'm sure Dina loves performing live, as she gets to scream "Crush, kill, destroy!" with plenty of angst and aggression. "Born Dead" is another piece that the singer really lets loose on, as does Elena and her screechy viola. It's so bizarre hearing viola mixed with heavy metal guitars, and ironically enough the viola takes most of the solos and plays most of the fills and harmonies, adding a jazzy, proggressive rock feel to every song on the CD. If you are interested in trying something new and different, definitely investigate Ghost Orgy. I'll be keeping an eye on them for sure to see where they go from here.
