Time warp back to the days when funk grooves were the norm and rock, rhythm & blues, and even salsa channels all converged under the jazz falls. Harold Davis, holder of the Fro moniker, is one slick six-string gunner who comes off at times like a young Carlos Santana under the tutelage of a sagely Herbie Hancock, with a mean penchant for wah-wah. Bassist Rich Zurkowsi and drummer Eric Kalb dare not break away from the funk-jazz template, and saxman Dave Savitsky nails that distinctly retro Steve Grossman vibe — the tenor sax replaced by an alto (all we need is a certain Czech-born keyboardist to complete the formula). "Bridgeporto Rico" is arguably Paisley's standout cut, a longish Latin rocker that lives up to the pun in its name with bouncy rhythms and percussive hi-jinx by one Johnny Durkin. Fro's jam band tendencies come to the fore as the disc progresses into "Iced Reality" and "Pressed For Time" with licks and solos that parallel Praxis and the early days of the Santana band, when a baby-faced Neal Schon dropped out of high school (!) to hook up with Carlos and cultivate his own gargantuan (wait for it) fro! The action finally heads to inner space for the "ethereality" of "Mr. Clean" and its un-sterile acid-funk flavorings. It's best to keep in mind that while the title player's nick is on the spine, the three letter-long abstraction is as much the name of the band as it is the principal writer's.
