Quite the mélange of styles and ideas over a four-year period, swirling round and round as though in a centrifuge: electro-punk/pop synths, twangy acoustic guitar, "UFO"-bass (the big, flatulent, analog kind we all love), kit drums and programmed ritmos, metal-ish power chords, shades of Devo and Funkadelic, Pac-Man & Mario Bros. bleeps, blips and bloops, the coupling of a manic guitar freakout and a Teutonic (diatonic) synth motif a la '70s Tangerine Dream — and even an intentionally goofy rap ("The Scoop") that recalls Lamar Latrel's shamelessly funny performance from Revenge Of The Nerds.
Multi-instrumentalist/lyricist/vocalist Korein — one-half of Infidel?/Castro! along with Colin Marston (who fulfills a variety of musical and technical roles on Memoirs) — matches the weirdness with a colorful cast of motley characters from various east coast avant entities. Making appearances are Kayo Dot trumpeter Forbes Graham on "Taking Out A Nanobot (In 8 Bits)," and Stinking Lizaveta guitarist Yanni Papadopoulos on "Only One Person Knows You When You're Down And Out, And That Person Is A Box Of Soft Chocolate Chip Cookies." Korein channels many of the cyberpunk gods of the 1980s; eighteen years later, "Shatterbrain" pays homage to Skinny Puppy's VIVIsect VI and Front 242's Tyranny For You. With a few exceptions, guest spots were self-penned by the third parties, Korein informs us. This release is easily a point of interest for followers of Tzadik and ReR.
