German death thrashers return with their sixth release Issue VI , a bubbling cauldron of metallic energy that will certainly scald your eardrums and overtake your senses with its unbridled fercocity and classy execution. Led by the aggressive and rough vocals of Leif Jensen, the excellent twin guitar attack of Florian Mueller & Hendrik Bache, the muscular bass of Alexander Pahl, and the superhuman drum barrage from Uwe Werning, Dew Scented blast through 12 cuts of lethal thrash metal that at times borders on technical, but always blistering and furious.
Much like bands like Nile, Mastodon, and Strapping Young Lad are propelled by their drummers, so are Dew Scented to a certain degree. Werning is a monster player, laying down a juggernaut of double-bass mayhem on songs like "In Defeat", "Never to Return", and "Turn to Ash" that will leave you breathless. Not to be outdone, Mueller and Bache are fine guitar players, whether clobbering you over the head with brutal riffs as on "Vortex", creating Pantera like textures on "Rituals of Time", or delivering intricate death metal passages on "Ruins of Hope", these guys have what it takes. The vocals, well, they might be the weakest link here. Jensen is a perfectly capable vocalist, but his style tends to get rather monotonous after a while, and in my opinion he could use a little variety to his attack to mix things up a bit.
Issue VI is a recommended slice of thrash with death metal tendencies, and will certainly appeal to fans of Arch Enemy, Darkane, and Annihilator.
