Coincidence: Mets Tes Lunettes et Écoute Comme Ça Sent Bon! Vol. 1

It's with both anticipation and trepidation hearing a band or artist for the first time. I am sitting here with a short press sheet for three releases by the band Coincidence, a French Fusion band that dates back to the 70's. I'd never heard of the band, and figured I would start with the compilation Volume 1 which clocks in at a brief 28 minutes and change. Made up of guitarist brothers Jean-Claude (guitars/keys) and Jean-Pierre Llabador, one might expect a mighty twin guitar assault to shoot out of the speakers. That's not the case, it's a relatively laid-back affair, and one might even label easy listening. An all-instrumental release from this four-piece band (Jean Pierre Barreda-Bass/Jacky Cataldo-Drums), it appears the brothers wrote and arranged all the music. The band released two proper albums; 1977's self-titled and Clef de ciel in 1979. The French title here translates to 'Put on Your Glasses and Listen to how Good it Smells " Vol. 1' in English.

On first listen, the thought that comes to mind is pleasant. Now, pleasant isn't a bad thing, but it’s also not a word that elicits excitement when it comes to music. The opening track "Chinese Lullaby" features both guitar and keyboard solos, but never gets out of second gear. I'd like to hear more punch, but it's more of an easy breezy type of tune. "Froggies" has a funky intro, and a lot of interplay between the instruments, but never quite breaks out of a jog into a full-blown sprint. The band displays an acoustic side with tracks such as "Sunlight" (which has a very abrupt odd ending), and "Sequences" which is a full rich sounding song with a beautiful melody. The band kicks in around the 1:50 mark featuring strings and melodic lead guitar, my favorite section of music on the disc, including the return to the two acoustic guitars to close the track. "Weaver’s Opus" follows in the same vein with keyboards taking the leads with acoustic guitars backing.

The album title and song names are translated from French to English. Pleasant is the word I will stick with, I can’t say I found a lot of exciting moments, the music is nice and well played, but it's not memorable or essential listening.
