Seether's sophomore release Karma and Effect took three years to put together, as the band was busy re-recording the song "Broken" off their debut album Disclaimer , turning it into a duet between lead singer Shaun Morgan and Evanescence vocalist Amy Lee. That song became a huge hit, and was the standout tune from The Punisher soundtrack. Now, the band is back with the hard-hitting Karma and Effect, a melodic collection of heavy rock numbers that scream MTV and alternative rock radio coverage on each and every song. Tracks like the first single "Remedy" or the Disturbed influenced "Truth" have big hooks to go along with plenty of guitar firepower, while the moody "Given" sees an emotional vocal performance from Morgan as well as plenty of heavy grooves.
However, one of the biggest problems here is that there's nothing on Karma and Effect that we haven't heard before. Many of the songs just sound too much like leftover Creed or Disturbed tunes, and the band never really lets loose, except on the savage rocker "I'm the One", a real vicious metal piece with loads of killer riffs and intense screams, and the brutal nu-metal stomp of 'Simplest Mistake". Seether just plays it a little too safe on many of these tunes, which might appeal to teenage girls, but the majority of the metal crowd will find a few too many ballads to give this much of a chance. A solid album, but in the grand scheme of things nothing that's going to shatter the universe.
