Raven Sad: Polar Human Circle

Raven Sad's Polar Human Circle is a captivating neo-progressive journey, echoing Marillion's darkness and melancholy. The band's unique sound is shaped by vocalist Gebriele Marconcini's haunting, sorrowful tones, reminiscent of a sad raven's cry. The rest of the band is currently comprised by guitarist Samuele Santanna, the outstanding bassist Marco Geri, drummer Francesco Carnesecchi, and pianist/keyboardist Fabrizio Trinci. Musically, Raven Sad excels with intricate instrumentation and rhythmic prowess, rivaling Dream Theater and The Pineapple Thief.

The album unfolds with "Andenes," setting the somber tone, followed by the melodic "When the Summer Collapses into Fall." The beautiful instrumental "Coda: A Tiny Passage to Outer State" seamlessly transitions into the poignant "Point Nemo (Nautilus Last Voyage)," a standout storytelling piece that showcases the band's ability to craft memorable, emotionally resonant songs.

While the vocals' tonality and accent may distract some listeners, the lyrical themes explore sadness, darkness and introspection, adding depth to the album. Raven Sad's musicianship shines, particularly in "The Obsidian Mirror," a jazzy instrumental showcase that highlights their technical prowess, even if it feels slightly disconnected from the rest of the record. The heaviness expands with "The Bringer of Light," a song that taints the band's sound with nuances of bands like Uriah Heep and Deep Purple, without abandoning the neo-progressive sensibilities and early Marillion vibes. This unique blend culminates in the epic 27-minute closer "Polar Human Circle," a song that resumes all the band has layered throughout the album, with well-crafted melodies, odd time signatures and systematic progression.

Polar Human Circle is a solid, heavy neo-progressive record, and Raven Sad's musical proposal is close to pristine. Fans of complex, melancholic music will appreciate their unique sound. A different vocal style might elevate their sound, but nonetheless, this album is a recommended listen for heavy neo-progressive enthusiasts seeking intricate instrumentation and emotional depth… cheers!
