Bowmen: Mission IV

Bowmen's latest album, Mission IV, kicks off with a bang, courtesy of the impactful opener "Demons". The German rockers from Munich, blend classic rock, alternative, grunge, and heavy metal elements, creating a unique sound reminiscent of Soundgarden, late-era Pearl Jam, QOTSA, early Alice In Chains, and a heavier version of Greenday. The band's focus on crafting hooky melodies, standout guitar riffs, and engaging rhythms is evident throughout the album. For the release of this, their third album, the band is comprised of Marcus Escher (guitars and vocals), Jan Wendel (guitars and vocals), Stefan Pfaffinger (bass and vocals), and Christian Klaus (drums and vocals).

While Mission IV showcases the band's skill and musicianship, the album's momentum is somewhat hindered by a mid-section lull, making some tracks feel forgettable. However, the album bookends with strength, featuring standout tracks like the fantastic opener and lead single “Demons”, "Said or Done", "Diggin' in the Dirt", the heavy groover “Still Got My Time”, "Palace of the King", and the epic "Black Angel".

As a first-time listener, I'm impressed by the band's quality and eager to explore their previous work. Although Mission IV may not make the "best of 2024" list, it's an appealing effort that highlights Bowmen's potential, a potential that not only showcases itself through their musicianship but also on their vocal work, an aspect of the band to which all four members contribute, adding a layer of attractiveness to the output. Fans of heavy, guitar-driven rock with a mix of grunge and classic rock elements will find something to enjoy here… cheers!
