Tantrum: No Place For The Damned
As they hit their tenth year, Scottish traditional metal outfit Tantrum, it would appear, are aiming for the big leagues. No Place For The Damned is only the band’s second full length release - they’ve also put out a couple of EPs over the years - but it is a clear mark in the ground that they now mean business. After going through a number of line-up changes, a solid five-piece of Mark Reid (vocals), Baz Fitzsimmons and Micah Snow (both on guitars), Chris Horne (bass) and Mark Riches (drums) have all the bases covered and while it would be difficult to suggest that they pack their romping, roaring anthems with too many surprises, there’s a maturity in the songwriting that does see NPFTD demand your attention.
Throughout, there’s a ferocity and controlled belligerence that takes the likes of the riff-fuelled “Hellbound Planet” to unexpected heights, while “The Judge” sits proudly in a mid-paced situation that drips with authority - and a cracking guitar solo sure doesn’t hurt either. From the cleverly structured “Traveller” to the full throttle “W.A.I.L.” Tantrum impress at every turn but if there’s a question, it’s whether there’s quite enough of an individual character within No Place For The Damned, or even within this band’s chosen musical path, for them to truly go over the top and move in with the big guys. However, armed with weapons as heavy as “Internal Bleeding” or “Manifest Destiny” this Scottish powerhouse have given themselves every chance.
There’s no doubting that the traditional heavy metal scene is a crowded space but if Tantrum can get themselves in front of the right audiences, the potential is here for them to go the distance. No Place For The Damned is hopefully the first step on that journey.
