From the Bay Area of California comes The Watchers, and their second album Nyctophilia for Ripple Music. Though their 2018 debut Black Abyss leaned a little heavier into the doom realm, Nyctophilia embraces the doom but reflects more of the band's love for classic heavy metal. Both "I Am the Dark" and "They Have No God" are faster paced songs, complete with chugging riffs, pounding drums, white-hot guitar solos, and melodic yet quite leathery lead vocals from guitarist Tim Narducci. "Garden Tomb" slows things down a bit, but instead of into Black Sabbath territory it's more moody Soundgarden or Alice in Chains...great song. "Eastward Through the Zodiac" continues on with this mid-paced and moody heavy metal, Tim's vocals sounding not far removed from ex-Journey/Santana vocalist/keyboard player Greg Rollie. "Haunt You When I'm Dead" chugs along like early Savatage, "Fightin' and Bleedin' offers up some super chunky and groovy riffs that never stop 'bumpin' and grindin', and "Taker" brings on the crushing doom for another of the album's highlights. The best though might be saved for last with the potent title track, loaded with frantic drums that drive the raging riffage and twin guitars of Narducci and Jeremy Von Epp.
Great stuff all around here on Nyctophilia, as The Watchers show they are an up-and-coming band on the metal scene that deserves your immediate attention.
