The Obsessed: Gilded Sorrow

Scott “Wino” Weinrich and his band of merry stoner metal mavens are back with their follow-up to 2017's very fine Sacred release, this one titled Gilded Sorrow and out now on Ripple Music. Joining Wino here is Brian Costantino (drums), Chris Angleberger (bass), and Jason Taylor (guitar). While no longer a 'power trio', even as a four-piece that mentality is still here, as Gilded Sorrow is full of heavy grooves, big fat riffs, and some sizzling lead guitar work, with Wino's instantly recognizable vocals ever-present. "Daughter of an Echo", "It's Not OK", and "Realize a Dream" start off the album in rumbling, stoner-ific fashion, while the dreamy, psychedelic title track slows things down, as meaty doom riffs collide with effects-laden vocals and a spacey vibe. Those slow doom riffs return for the apocalyptic dirge "Stoned Back to the Bomb Age", and more of those glorious heavy riffs permeate the creepy "Wellspring-Dark Sunshine", showing that this band can do the slower, plodding stuff just as successfully as the faster-paced material. "Jailine" is exactly the latter, a frantic, Motorhead-meets-The Ramones rocker that combines hard rock, punk, and garage rock for the big uptempo track on the album. "Yen Sleep" returns things to monolithic doom/stoner rifftastic glory (man, the guitar tones on this album are KILLER!), and "Lucky Free Nice Machine" is a quick, melodic instrumental to close out the album...wish they expanded on this a little bit, but it's good for what it is.

They don't have a large catalog, but each new album brings about more to celebrate, and Gilded Sorrow is another gem from The Obsessed, sure to be one of the best stoner/doom albums of 2024. Long live Wino, and long live the riff!
