Hashtronaut: No Return
Love songs with heavy doom & stoner riffs? Check. How about lyrics all about the almighty weed? Check. Perhaps vocals that sound like a blend of early Mastodon and Ozzy Osbourne? Check! Hashtronaut are from Colorado and play pummeling doom & stoner metal, fueled by loads of potent herb and delivering trippy & heavy music that is sure to fire up all the riff-lovers out there. No shortage of guitar firepower to be found on tracks like "Rip Wizard" and "Cough It Up", while the slow dirge of "Carcinogen" has some of the slowest, meanest bass & guitar rumblings I've heard in some time. "Dead Cloud" shows their psychedelic side, while "Hex" and Lung Ruiner" evoke classic Black Sabbath as much as it does acts like Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Sleep, and Weedeater. Plus, you have the monstrous instrumental "Marsquake", which, simply crushes everything in its path. It's too bad though that the closing killer "Blast Off" is so brief...at only 30 seconds, it delivers a manic intensity that's not heard on the rest of the album, and could have easily been expanded on. Regardless, this is killer stuff for any weed enthusiast and folks who can't get enough of the almighty riff.

Hashtronaut: No Return Posted by Jon Neudorf, SoT Staff Writer on 2024-06-03 15:34:55 My Score:
Here is another wonderful find sans the Neudorf household. I bring you Denver, Colorado’s Hashtronaut and their debut full length tiled No Return, released in March of this year. The band consists of:
Kellen McInerney (regular guitar)
Robb Park (stunt guitar)
Eric Garcia (drums)
Daniel Smith (lead vocals, bass)
I will say this " if No Return is not in my ‘Best Of’ list at the end of the year I will be very surprised. Yes, this album is that good. The band play stoner/sludge/doom in a most hypnotic and trance inducing way. The riffs and vocals are both superb, all backed by a thunderous rhythm section. Smith has a versatile voice, whether hitting soaring clean notes or going for a more guttural approach, almost on the verge of growls. Either way, the results are simply outstanding beginning with the album opening “Rip Wizard”, and the title says it all. The mystical-like slow burning guitar solo and the majestic vocals all add to an intoxicating, near hypnotizing atmosphere. Excellent stoner rock with some alternative ‘90s grunge thrown into the mix. The swirling guitar riffs in “Cough It Up” soon turn into big, meaty riffs, all slow and doomy and when you add the mind-bending guitar solo, the result is another stunner. The band are adept at varying the tempo, traversing heavy and light sounds, as the riffs drips with fuzz and the drums head into a steady gallop. On the eight minute “Carcinogen”, the slow and doomy riffs hit all the right notes, very Sabbathy for sure but by no means a copycat. Swirling guitar effects adds to the trippy nuance and mystical feel and the ensuing Egyptian/Arabian guitar toned riffs, exudes that exotic vibe that I just love. This music can take you to another time and place, but only if you let it and immerse yourself in all this music has to offer. Next is “Dead Cloud” beginning with a mellow and slightly melancholic guitar riff before the heaviness lets loose once again, building into some stellar stoner/doom. A cosmic sounding guitar solo takes the song home. The hazy and trippy “Hex” is another cool track with fantastic lead guitar only to end much too soon. The music is so mesmerizing you just don’t expect it to end.
That’s the first five tracks, there are still four more to wrap your head around. There can be no doubt, Hashtronaut is a force to be reckoned with. Easily recommended!
A Blues Funeral Recordings’ release.
