Desolation Sound: Silver Rain

Following on from their 2022 full length debut Salish Rock, Washington outfit Desolation Sound made a quick-fire return with Silver Rain in August 2023. Pulling influences from a variety of places, where I’d suggest this four-piece land takes in alternative rock, power pop and Americana, although with all of those ideals delivered in a decidedly dowdy manner, that latter aspect also adds a 90s-ish feel to proceedings.

“Snake Fog Rise” opens the album, the strum and hard hitting drums making an impression but for me the vocals from Daniel DeShorn are a little too scattergun to keep me totally reeled in. Not everything has the same issues, “Silver Rain” and “Two Ships” much more sure footed in the vocal department. However, with a mid-paced situation sought out for most of this album, if I was to be honest, there’s not much that made a lasting impact. “Paper White Moon” possesses more of a shimmer and shine, while “Fireproof Girl” has a certain beauty sitting at its core and for me they are this release’s standouts.

Now, admittedly, in terms of style, this kind of mumbling, intentionally uneventful fare isn’t something I’d usually be attracted to. However, there’s no doubt that there’s an honesty and fragility in play that not every songwriter can capture and DeShorn has to be commended for having that talent in abundance, That said, even with that in mind, nothing much here really stays the course and I find that once this Silver Rain stops falling, it’s all too easily forgotten.
