The Midnight Callers: Rattled Humming Heart

Rattled Humming Heart is the second album from power-poppers The Midnight Callers, the band’s debut Red Letter Glow gaining a host of admiring glances from those who love their power to pop and their rock to arrive with a shimmer of 70s glam. Roll the influence dice and see where they land and there’s a good chance that you’ll find a band The Midnight Callers remind you of. One of the main strands in that chain being Cheap Trick, both in the way this album hits you sonically and the manner that a lot of this material sounds remarkably British and yet intrinsically American. Imagine early Enuff Z’Nuff with a better singer, early Cheap Trick, Slade, Sweet and well, you know a little band that all of those acts might have heard once or twice… The Beatles and you’ll quickly get a handle on what’s going on here.

“Closer” almost reaches back into 50s rock n roll territory, but with a punky heart that The Ramones would have worn on their sleeves, “Girl On The Run” makes you check that you haven’t just slapped the debut album from Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers on the turn table and yet, for all that you hear all of these other band’s sounds rush past as this album spins, the results never hit as hackneyed or tired. That in itself is clever, but The Midnight Callers then spoon on ladles of believability through great vocals from Chris Paine and Martin Stubbs - and guitars from the same pair - and infuse all that with the light but firm touch of the rhythm section of Marley Myrianthopoulos (bass) and Julien Budremo (drums). Honestly, it’s virtually impossible not to have a good time while “Little Runaround” swirls with delight in your ear and “Maggie” cleanses the palate with a beautiful little acoustic workout.

From start to finish Rattled Humming Heart hits the spot, whisking you unashamedly back to the 70s, whether that be to the stack-heeled shiny catsuit days or a pop that rocks so proud that it calls the dream police. Delivered with verve, and no little class, The Midnight Callers are well worth staying up all night for.
