Jane Getter Premonition: Division World

2021's Anomolia was my first exposure to the Jane Getter Premonition, and it left a strong impression making my top 10 for 2021. Division World is their third release and has some big shoes to fill following up Anomolia. The band is about the songs here, unique arrangements featuring catchy melodic melodies. In addition, the solo spots are important components; they give them a lift and add an important punch. Listen to the solo break in "Dissipate"; you get some angular guitar, while Adam Holzman adds excellent keyboards. His sonic textures throughout are the secret sauce. It's one of my favorite moments on the album, and I like the second guitar solo, a nice melodic run with the band churning underneath. In addition to Holzman, the band is made up of Alex Skolnick (guitar), Paul Frazier (bass), and Gene Lake (drums).

Getter has a comforting voice, an almost laid back quality that fits the music perfectly. The chorus sections often feature layered background vocals, a nice touch. The instrumental "Compass" has a great opening riff, and is as catchy as any of the vocal tracks. There is a touch of darkness to the music, which I rather enjoy. "End The Blame" might be single material, a moody number that slowly builds to an emotional guitar solo, my favorite part of the song. I love the feel of the intro of "Layers", but once you get into the song it drags. I wish the band would stretch out or add an additional instrumental or two; the short solo sections are always my favorite moments. It might also help to avoid the sameness that you start to feel as you get into the album, the overall mood or tone of the songs is very similar. I hate to say that is a flaw, but the atmospheric moody mid-tempo themes dominate. "Mixed Up" is an example of how the guitar and keyboard solos can lift a song, and "Rewind Regain" does the same with the keyboard solo.

As with its predecessor Anomilia, the cover art is striking. I hope they can get out as an opening act or possibly tour some clubs, I think they would be an excellent live act to catch. As I mentioned above, I think the solo spots are where this record opens up, more of those moments are needed, but clearly they were going for songs first on Division World.
