Bad Rain: Room To Breathe

Sometimes all you need is a good time. Bad Rain are a good time. Admittedly they are forty years too late with this particular good time but with their debut EP, Room To Breathe, there’s no doubt that this German based four piece have a love and understanding of the music they’ve chosen to revisit. With UK born singer Dan Byrne at the front, this outfit have a vocalist who reminds in flashes of a whole host of great singers from years gone by without ever really feeling the need to become a mimic, and when he’s fronting the blues dripping mid-paced “Kingdom” he brings his own undoubted authority to bare. Good though that track may be, melodic rock bands stand or fall on their uptempo stompers and with this EP’s title track sliding easily into that role, from the off you know you are in safe hands. Guitarist Dani Davis conjures up the tight looseness fare like this needs to thrive and the riffs to match - ably backed by Chris B on bass and Veit Schlembach on drums - meaning the whole shebang is driven home with a real sense of purpose and no little fun.

Now, as you’ll gather from the above, there’s not much going on here that you, I or indeed Bad Rain haven’t heard before, but by being less smooth, slick and, well, boring than a lot of the cookie-cutter melodic rock bands currently clogging the market, where Bad Rain win out is through the dirty, ever so slightly grimy edge they possess. Early days for these retro-80s rockers, but the signs so far are very promising indeed.
